Severe Weather Protocal
There may be occasions where severe or extreme weather affects travel, disrupts services, or impacts the safe operation of the school site. This may include snow and ice, storms, high winds, flooding, or extreme heat.
We will always make every effort to keep the school open when it is safe to do so. However, there may be times when opening the school would be unsafe for pupils and staff.
The decision to close the school, either before the start of the day or during the school day, will be made by the Headteacher, based on the best available information from the Met Office, UKHSA, local authorities, and on‑site assessments.
Reasons the School May Need to Close
The school will only close if one or more of the following conditions apply:
-
Insufficient staff are able to travel safely to school to maintain safe supervision and operation.
-
Conditions on site are dangerous, including unsafe temperatures indoors, structural risks, flooding, ice, or storm damage.
-
Travel conditions are hazardous or are expected to become hazardous, making it unsafe for pupils, staff, or transport providers.
-
Official Red Weather Warnings (e.g., danger to life) are issued that make opening the school unsafe.
How We Will Communicate a Closure
If the school needs to close due to any of the above conditions:
-
A banner will appear at the top of our website as soon as a decision is made.
-
A text message and email will be sent to all parents and carers via our school communication system.
Please ensure the school office has your correct mobile number and email address so you receive alerts promptly.
If the School Has to Close During the Day
In the event of an unforeseen closure during the school day due to rapidly worsening weather or other extreme circumstances:
-
Parents will be contacted directly by phone.
-
The school will work with transport providers to arrange collection for pupils who use school transport. Children will only be sent home if we have made contact and know that there is someone there to meet them.
-
We will only close during the school day in the most exceptional circumstances.
-
Wherever possible, pupils will remain on site until the end of the school day unless it is unsafe to do so.
